thank you burners

two other things that i admire about san francisco and the bay area in general… how proactive people are to defend their traditions and love for nature… and the other thing is that how a little massive group of artists that for twenty years have been celebrating burning man in the desert, get together to help that same cause.
ocean beach right on the west-side of san francisco is the most incredible little thing. any friday or saturday night, you park your car there, walk over to the beach, bring your friends, sleeping bags, warm clothes, wood, matches, music and happiness, and you set a bonfire at the beach that for several hours makes you feel lucky to just be alive.
there is something therapeutical about sitting next to a huge fire, right next to the pacific ocean at night. to this day, it’s one of my most cherished activities to do with friends.
the problem is that it has become so big, that in warm nights you can see around 100 bonfires at the beach. it’s pretty incredible looking around you and seeing so much fire, but obviously that causes some pollution issues. the beach is owned by park services so they recently decided to ban bonfires.
well, it didn’t last long. they received thousands of emails and letters asking them to rethink their decision, and a group of 100 volunteers or so went to the beach to clean the beach from one side to the other of everything they could find… nails, ashes, wood, trash, whatever.
and then burning man artists got together and set a proposal to build several unique fire rings, so that people could use them at night at will.
they are now being installed mid-april and bonfires are to be allowed again. it’s great. during the day you have the most beaufitul fire rings you could imagine and at night you can use them with your friends to share some laughs and warm up next to a fire.
thank you burning man.
thank you san francisco.
